The astonishing Genesis 1-11

The word from my pastor is that our church will be basing its Sunday teaching for the next few months on Genesis 1-11 – the “Protohistory” (in Gordon Wenham’s usage) or, to quote another OT scholar, “the Old Testament of the Old Testament.”

It’s the epistemology, stupid

Gavin Ashenden, some-time chaplain to the late queen, after long soul-searching left the Anglican church for Roman Catholicism, around three years ago. That’s out of the frying pan into the fire as far as I can see, but I respect his conscience and his intellect, and indeed his work helped me bottom out some of the ideas in my own e-book on the Great Deception, Seeing through Smoke. He was unwilling to live by lies.

The star of Bethelehem and divine sovereignty

My pastor’s degree dissertation on Satan in Revelation 12 & 13 (so that’s why you’re preaching through Revelation Mike!) mentioned in passing astronomical/astrological interpretations of the “woman and dragon” vision of Revelation 12. That put me back on the trail of Mike Heiser’s interesting YouTube clips on the star of Bethlehem, which are in turn highly dependent on Ernest L. Martin’s book on the subject, available for free download here.

I promised I’d say something about Michael Denton’s The Miracle of Man, the premise of which is the extraordinary fine tuning of the universe itself not only for life, but for the existence of warm blooded, bipedal, oxygen-breathing mankind as the only plausible kind of intelligent and technological biological life-form in the universe.

The old, old story

I’m currently reading Michael Denton’s new book, The Miracle of Man, which explores some of the astonishing fine tuning of the Universe not only for life, but for human life. I must do a blog on it soon, but my first reaction was a sense of resentment at how the insane deception now surrounding us on every side has drawn me from a decade of study of such wonders of nature (and hence of God) to filling these pages with stuff categorised as “politics and sociology”.

Revisiting Genesis 1 as a tabernacle-building text

Let’s take some time out from geopolitics to give a few new thoughts on my contention (far from unique) that the way to understand the Genesis 1 creation account is as (a) a non-historic place-setter for the rest of Genesis and, indeed the Bible; (b) a phenomenological, rather than a theoretical, account; and (c) a temple-building text.
